Party's General Secretary moving on
Friday, February 15, 2008
As the Co-op News reports, Peter Hunt has announced that he will be stepping down as General Secretary of the Co-operative Party at the end of the month. Peter will continue to work with the co-operative and mutual sector, particularly with Mutuo, the mutual think tank and consultancy.Peter's ten years at the helm of the Co-operative Party have been hugely important and hugely productive. Four parliamentary acts steered through Parliament which have modernised the law for co-ops, building societies and credit unions and promoted renewable energy and employee ownership; a major review of co-operative legislation now in motion; inspiring hundreds of new mutuals, in particular foundation hospital trusts and football supporters' trusts; leadership for the co-operative movement from the Commission to the society merger and constitutional review; a proper focus on what co-operative principles can and should achieve for society.
Above all Peter leaves the Party in high regard across the co-operative and labour movements and with influence at the highest levels.
Matt Ball, the parliamentary officer, is also leaving to work with Pete. It won't be the same at Weston Street without them but it's nice to know that they won't be too far away.
