The Co-operative Party - Enterprise, Empowerment, Accountability

Councillors are great, so are co-ops

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

Now we in the Co-operative Party like councillors, we really do. We especially like the several hundred Labour Co-operative councillors who work hard to represent their communities and make difficult decisions on their behalf.

But Cllr Bob Piper will do himself a disservice if he opposes plans to share power a little more with people who use, pay or work for public services are misplaced.

Not all co-ops are well-run. Not all co-ops are ethical.

But as models for our public services that trust people, respond to local need and are run for the long-term good of communities, co-operatives are often ideal.

I said I had my reservations. The reservations are about accountability. I have worked with some very good co-operatives, including the Burrowes Street TMC in Walsall. I believe the Blair 'double devolution' is not so much about empowerment or co-operatives as his loathing for local government, which he knows little about... and understands even less. Co-operatives have a strong democratic principle, but I don't think you can say that for the whole of the voluntary sector.

Don't be so bloody touchy. I like the site, by the way.

You're right. It often seems that co-ops are more threatening though to councillors as they develop their own democratic buy-in. It's harder to take a contract away from a co-op than a voluntary body or private company. Now I think that's a good thing!

Sorry. I think I was ready to rant at someone today.
